Concerned about Door Knockers in your community?
Here are a few tips to help you recognize legitimate sales people if you are considering a purchase via a door-to-door sale.
1. Know with whom you are doing business
- Ask the salesperson for their photo identification. All SecurTek Authorized Dealers must carry SecurTek-issued photo identification.
- If in doubt, contact the SecurTek Customer Care Centre at 1-877-777-7590, or your Authorized Dealer, to confirm if their representatives are going door-to-door.
- Check to see if the service or the product the company is offering is already available from your existing provider. SecurTek has many services available to help protect you and your assets, including a variety of wireless back-up units to safeguard you if your phone line is not functional.
2. Be wary of high-pressure sales tactics
- Try not to feel pressured into buying something from a door-to-door salesperson.
- A legitimate company will allow you time to do some research and make up your mind. They also should not hesitate if you ask to see identification or choose to call the company to verify the person's credentials.
- If you are not interested in the product the door-to-door salesperson is offering, do not let them into your home. If at any time you want the salesperson to leave, be firm and ask them to go.
3. Read the contract carefully
- Always make sure you get a written contract that outlines all the details of the transaction.
- Read the fine print before you sign anything. Don't agree to any terms you do not fully understand.
- Understand the "Buyers Right to Cancel" clause on all contracts. Even if you do make a purchase from a door-to-door salesperson and want to change your mind, by law you have until 10 days after the contract is signed to cancel the agreement without penalty.
- Be sure to understand all the terms: When do I own the equipment? When or how often can my monthly fees be raised? What service is included?
